Obituary for Mary O. Williams

MARY OLIVA WILLIAMS passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, surrounded by her loving sisters Eva and Catherine, and loving caregiver, Rebecca Kyere. Mary was born in Aberdeen, Maryland on April 12, 1923, the seventh of twelve children born to the late Vandellia and Hattie Williams.

Mary attended Swan Creek Elementary School and graduated from Havre de Grace Colored High School, in Havre de Grace, Maryland. She attended and received her degree from Cortez Peters Business School. Upon completion of Cortez Peters Business School, she was employed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground as a secretary for a number of years. After her retirement, Mary was caretaker for her father, Vandellia; her uncle, Otto and Aunt Lizzette; sister-in-law, Bernice; sister Ruth; and brother, Percy V., until she was no longer able.

Mary was a particular, peculiar, fastidious eater, she enjoyed preparing fancy foods for her nieces, nephews and their many friends. One of their favorites was “cherry gravy” as the young people called it. Aunt Mary would teach you everything from in the garden picking vegetables to gathering eggs from the chicken house. She was very quiet, but the “engine” that ran the house.

Mary accepted Christ at an early age; she was a lifelong and faithful member of Union United Methodist Church. Mary served as chaplain of the United Methodist Women for several years. Serving as a teacher for Sunday School and Vacation Bible School was a lifelong passion that brought her happiness and love.

Mary leaves to cherish life and precious memories: her loving and devoted sisters Mildred W. Batte, Sykesville, Maryland; Eva V. Williams and Catherine W. Burks both of Aberdeen, Maryland; and, one brother, Irving Williams (Elvira), Rockville, Maryland, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, several godchildren, and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth Stansbury and Gladys Williams; and, her brothers: Percy V., Russell E. and Otto W. Williams.
