Daisy LaVerne Gittings (nee Bessie Elizabeth Thomas) was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. George E. and Maude E. Thomas on November 26, 1929 in Creswell, Maryland. On Friday July 26, 2019 she departed this life to be at rest in the arms of the Lord.

Daisy was baptized as a youth. She attended John Wesley United Methodist Church in Abingdon. In 1946, she married the late Louis H. Gittings, of Darlington, MD.

Daisy grew up in Harford County, Maryland, where she attended the John Wesley Colored School followed by Bel Air Colored High School. She touched many hearts while working for the Army and Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES). After 25 years at AAFES, she retired and went on to work for APGFCU. Daisy put smiles on the faces of all she came in contact with. She left APGFCU after 24 years of diligent service.

Daisy is preceded in death by a brother John V. Thomas, sisters Doris Holland and Peggy Redd. She leaves to cherish her memory: her five children Lorraine Holloway of Plant City, FL, Louis Gittings, Jr. of Aberdeen, MD, Patricia Coley of Aberdeen, MD, Sharon Smothers of Aberdeen, MD, and Cheryl Gittings of Philadelphia, PA, one sister, Josephine Ferguson-Dorman of Abingdon, MD, 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and dear friend and daughter from another mother Arletha Candy Myers

Oh how I loved you so. Graceful, dignified, compassionate, charming, witty, beautiful and so many more adjectives. Thanks so much for loving me with your whole heart. You fought a good fight, you finished the course, and I know you received your crown. I can see you and Aunt Peggy in matching suits and hats. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. I too shall miss you much, but I will carry you and our memories in my heart. Until we meet again, love always, Candy

The best person I know, and may ever know, left us for a more peaceful place on Friday. I'll remember that magical smile, the music that filled the apartment, the great friends you made who shined brighter in your presence, the joy, the dancing, your impeccable style, the wonderful holiday meals (and the baked beans, potato salad and deviled eggs that everyone relied on you for for the backyard bbqs) and wow, all the love you gave. So much grace. I love you Mom. I'll miss you. I'll think of you always.
