Life Story
Cleo Patricia Hoke, affectionately known as “Cle,” was born to Tevis L. S. Hoke and Margaret Hoke on May 23, 1942, at Harford Memorial Hospital and went home to be with the Lord on July 23, 2020. She grew up in Havre de Grace; where she attended Havre de Grace Colored School and graduated from Havre de Grace Consolidated School. She furthered her education by attending Bowie State Teachers College and Cortez Peters Business College.

Cleo’s professional career was spent as a federal civilian employee at Aberdeen Proving Ground until her retirement in 1999. Becoming restless with retirement life, she took a job at Harford Community College, where she worked from 2001-2014.

It was in adulthood that she received the precious gift of salvation. She was a faithful and dutiful member of St. James A.M.E church located in Havre de Grace, MD. During her years of service in God’s house, she was President of the Women’s Missionary Society and a member of the Chancel Choir.

In this life, Cleo enjoyed baking, shopping, and gardening. Around town, Cleo was known for her pound cake, chocolate chip cookies, and sugar cookies. Holidays and her children’s lunchboxes were always brightened up with these treats. She enjoyed shopping trips to malls and outlets in the company of her sister (who was also her best friend). Cleo also had a way of making sure the house was decorated with seasonal flowers.

Cleo was predeceased by her mother, Margaret Hoke and sister, Charlotte Hoke. She leaves in celebration of her life, her father, Tevis L. S. Hoke; sister, Margaret S. Fluitt; son, Tracy Brown, Sr. (wife, Jamie); daughter, Nicole Hoke Wilson (husband, Timothy); grandsons Tracy Brown, Jr. and Elijah Wilson; niece, Kim F. Fluitt; nephew, Kevin L. Fluitt; great-nieces, Charlotte Fluitt and Maya DeSouza; great-nephew, Quinton Fluitt; and first cousins, Lois Smith, Marlene Speights, Yvonne Smith, and Vanessa McDaniels. She also leaves to cherish her memories a host of extended family and friends.

Those who desire may make donations to: The Havre de Grace Colored School Museum and Cultural Center, Inc., 555 Alliance Street, Havre de Grace, Maryland 21078.
